Writing Curriculum Intent

  • At Sigglesthorne CofE Primary Academy we aim to inspire confident and passionate readers and writers. English is a part of every lesson across our curriculum and is a necessary skill to succeed. Children are supported in developing their reading, writing, speaking and listening skills throughout the whole school in order to prepare them for a successful future.

  • We aim to inspire creative and enthusiastic writers by supporting our English lessons with high-quality texts that promote discussion and enjoyment. English lessons are taught daily following a sequence of lessons allowing the children to first explore an existing text, before giving them the opportunity to plan and write their own. The audience and purpose of writing is given a high priority – children are always made aware of who their writing is for and lessons are planned to ensure their writing is meaningful and has a purpose. In order to expose our children to a wide range of high-quality texts, each term at least one fiction, one non-fiction and one poetry unit is planned and delivered.

  • As a result of the sequence of writing lessons followed, our children become familiar with writing for different audiences and purposes. Our children are confident to use a range of vocabulary and can apply the GPS features that they have been taught. They produce high-quality writing that they are proud of. Writing is regularly assessed during lessons and live-marking is used to provide instant feedback. Independent pieces of writing  are completed at the end of each unit and these are used to inform and tailor planning for the next unit. Children are also encouraged to edit and make improvements to their final pieces of writing. Many of our children make at least expected progress and tailored interventions are put in place for those who may need some extra support.
