Phonics Curriculum Intent

  • At Sigglesthorne CofE Primary Academy we aim to inspire confident and passionate readers and writers. English is a part of every lesson across our curriculum and is a necessary skill to succeed. Children are supported in developing their reading, writing, speaking and listening skills throughout the whole school in order to prepare them for a successful future.

  • As of Spring 2022, we have adopted the Little Wandle Letters and Sounds systematic synthetic phonics programme (SSP) to deliver phonics teaching in school. The programme has been built around the update (Letters and Sounds improving rates of progress 2021) and draws on the latest research into how children learn best; how to ensure learning stays in children’s long term memory and how best to enable children to apply their learning to become highly competent readers. Discrete phonics sessions are taught daily in EYFS and KS1 where the children learn new sounds, consolidate their knowledge of existing sounds, improve their ability to segment and blend sounds and apply their phonics knowledge in reading and writing.

  • As a result of high quality teaching of phonics across EYFS and KS1, our children are able to become fluent and confident readers and writers.  Our children make good progress from their starting points.  Children’s phonics knowledge is closely monitored and assessed every 6 weeks. Keep-up sessions are put in place for any child who requires extra support. Phonics attainment is also assessed by the Phonics Screening Check at the end of Year 1.
