We aim for our children to at Sigglesthorne CE Primary Academy we recognise that Art and Design stimulates creativity and imagination. It provides visual, tactile and sensory experiences and a unique way of understanding and responding to the world. It enables children of all abilities to communicate what they see, feel and think through the use of colour, print, texture, form and pattern. It enables children to explore and experience different materials and processes.
We encourage children to explore ideas and meanings through the work of a range of artists, sculptors and designers. Learning about the roles and functions of art, allows our children to explore the impact it has had on contemporary life and that of different times and cultures. The appreciation and enjoyment of the visual arts enriches our lives.
How do we achieve our aims? The teaching of art follows the National Curriculum and links to topics to ensure a structured approach to creativity. Children are taught art and DT as a part of their termly topic work. They study artists, impressionists and sculptors over a period of weeks producing a quality final end piece of work.
The EYFS children have access to art and creative materials as a part of their ongoing provision. They also study the work of an artist every half term and produce a piece of work in the style of this artist. In KS1 and KS2 the children study a range of historic and contemporary artists and designers. They also examine sculpture and form. They learn about the work of artists and study context and history. The children progress to examining specific pieces and planning their own work, they examine colour, texture and form. Children are supported in using a range of techniques in art and design. They produce a final piece which they then evaluate and critique
How will we know we have achieved our aims? Art assessments are ongoing throughout the year. Teachers assess children’s work in sketch books and provide feedback. Staff identify their termly art activities in a structured whole school format. This enables the subject lead to conduct regular reviews of sketch books and final pieces.
