Science

Intent

At Sigglesthorne Church of England Primary Academy, we strive for all children to receive a high quality science education. We aim to inspire and enthuse learners to take what they have learnt beyond school life and into the wider world. Our lessons will ignite curiosity and encourage our children to question, challenge and problem solve.

Science is taught through a thematic approach wherever possible. Our curriculum is carefully planned to meet the needs of all our children. Our detailed plans map out the themes covered every term for each key stage and ensure that all national curriculum objectives and skills are met. These plans define what we will teach and ensure an appropriate balance of work across each term.

Implementation

To ensure high standards of teaching and learning are embedded within science at Sigglesthorne Church of England Primary Academy, we implement a curriculum that is progressive throughout the whole school. In addition to teaching the necessary knowledge required, we also ensure that children work scientifically from an early age; this ranges from simply making observations and asking questions, to the more advanced skills of designing their own investigations and interpreting data.

We believe that science teaching should naturally develop a child’s mind about the world around them. It should encourage curiosity through exciting lessons and provide opportunities for each child to apply theoretical ideas of solving practical problems. Through their study, children will not only develop their skills and understanding in the key areas of Scientific Enquiry but they will be able to use accurate scientific vocabulary to talk about their ideas and findings. 

Children are assessed at the end of each unit with a view to ensuring children achieve the key knowledge for each unit

Impact

Our science curriculum is high quality, well thought out and is planned to demonstrate progression. We believe science is good when….

1. We develop children’s natural curiosity
2. Children ask questions and make independent choices
3. Children take part in practical and hands on activities
4. Children use scientific vocabulary accurately and appropriately
5. Children learn about scientists who have shaped our world.

The children are assessed at the end of each unit. The impact and measure of this is to ensure that children are equipped with transferable scientific skills and knowledge that will enable them to be ready for the curriculum at Key Stage 3 and for life as an adult in the wider world.
